The line running between utility poles is the utility's to maintain. Penelec trims that corridor on a four-to-five-year cycle.
The line running from the pole to your house — the service drop — is yours, not theirs. FirstEnergy's own vegetation management guidance says that when trees are located between a utility pole and the customer's home, they will disconnect the service but in most cases the customer is responsible for the actual tree removal.
The useful part: Penelec will disconnect that service drop so a crew can work safely, and you just have to ask. Penelec: 1-800-545-7741.
